$Where presidents eat. Where legends are made.
“The Triad fountainhead of Lexington-style, cooking over hickory since 1930.”
Order the chopped pork plate with barbecue slaw and a peach cobbler, and pair it with the house hush puppies. A short drive from Lexington; open Monday through Saturday, closed Sunday.
Started by Warner Stamey, the pitmaster who codified Lexington-style barbecue and mentored Wayne Monk and Red Bridges, Stamey's has cooked pork shoulders over hickory coals since 1930. Its flagship sits across from the Greensboro Coliseum and is a genuine origin point for the style.
Regulars point to Chopped Pork Plate, Barbecue Slaw, Hush Puppies, and Peach Cobbler.
Stamey's Barbecue is mid-range ($$).
Stamey's Barbecue serves Lexington-Style barbecue — Lexington (or 'Piedmont') barbecue is built on pork shoulder rather than whole hog, cooked low and slow over hardwood coals until it can be chopped or sliced. It is dressed with a thin, tangy tomato-and-vinegar sauce known locally as 'dip,' and the same dip flavors the region's signature 'red slaw' (also called barbecue slaw), which uses no mayonnaise. The style traces to tent cooks like Sid Weaver and Jess Swicegood on the Lexington courthouse square in the early 1900s and was codified by pitmaster Warner Stamey. Davidson County calls itself the 'Barbecue Capital of the World.'
